THE INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK OF ALBERT CLAVEILLE

AND THE COURSES OFFERED

The international outlook of our school

At Lycée Albert Claveille we wish to provide our students with both a strong technical background and a good proficiency in the modern languages we teach (English, Spanish, German). That's why in our freshly rehabilitated school, language teaching involves the latest techniques recommended by the French Department of Education for the students to acquire the 5 linguistic skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking and interacting).

Our students' training is backed up by updated ICT equipment (Medialab allowing work in small groups of 3 to 7 pupils, computers and videoprojector in each FL-dedicated classroom with Internet access, i-pods, etc.)

4 out 6 Seconde classes this year are divided into "skill groups" allowing them intensive practise of one skill at a time according to their levels and needs, in groups smaller and made up of different students than in their 'normal' class. The aim is to place our students in the best conditions to reach levels B1 (end of 'Seconde'), and B2 (end of 'Terminale') of the CEFRL (Common  European Reference Frame for Languages).

Other actions also point out to the importance granted to language learning in our school. We may list for example, the European section implemented this year and the work placements abroad for our post-Baccalauréat and post-BTS students.

The European section

This is a newly implemented project at the Lycée. It seeks to support 17 Seconde students who had already followed the corresponding "Section Européenne" training in secondary school to further and advance their English language skills. The program is twofold :

- Their Engineering sciences course is taught in English jointly by an engineering sciences teacher and the American assistant, thus allowing students to develop their technical skills at the same time as practising and expanding their English.

- These students will be involved in a partnership project with an English school that will enable them to exchange e-mails and to videoconference with their English partners so as to know more about each other's cultures.

Work placements in Europe
We strongly support and encourage international work placements abroad and we work to promote European projects such as Erasmus that facilitate global travel, further linguistic development and broaden students' professional prospects. Every year, we place our students in foreign firms thanks to financial support from ADAST (Agence pour le Développement en Aquitaine des Séjours transnationaux), a European organization that coordinates work placements within the European Union locally.

Linguistic and cultural trips abroad

Trips and excursions seek to benefit the learning experience. The aims and advantages of these travels are to discover new cultures, to deepen and develop the issues and topics discussed in the classroom and to demonstrate their relevance in the real world.
Between the 14 and 20 March 2009, a group of approximately 50 students and their teachers enjoyed a journey to London. The students took advantage of the abundant historical, cultural and innovative experiences Britain's capital has to offer.

London is a modern and cosmopolitan world, crawling with life. With more than 50 nationalities, speaking more than 300 languages and museums and galleries by the hundreds, it truly was an invaluable experience with something for everyone.

Between the 16 and 20 March 2009, the Lycée organised a successful voyage to Barcelona, the capital of Catalunya (Spain). Situated between sea and mountains, Barcelona has a fantastic balance between traditional beauty, gothic constructions and the innovative architecture of Gaudi.

In spring 2010, the Applied Arts students, had the opportunity to study and explore Prague. Known as "the magical capital of Europe" and the centre of baroque art, Prague is an architecturally rich town. It offers tourists an array of spectacular buildings and constructions that highlight the best of the Baroque art era, while at the same time offering fantastic examples of gothic art, illustrated in particular by the magnificent Charles Bridge.
Opening up the Lycée to the world and broadening the minds of our students is a fundamental project at Claveille. We believe it is necessary, particularly in the contemporary world, to introduce young minds to global issues, culture and transnational technology.

With this in mind, our establishment continues to offer a diverse selection of language courses (English, Spanish, and German) and we strongly encourage students to persevere with their second language if possible. We believe language proficiency is becoming more and more important, especially within the realm of higher education and the world of employment.

THE COURSES OFFERED

After 3 years in high school (Seconde, Première, Terminale), our students sit the "Baccalauréat". It is the diploma that marks the end of High School Education and gives access to the working world,or to higher studies (at University or in engineering school).

Seconde: This constitutes the first year of Lycée. In our technical college, these classes are made up of students whose general aim is to continue their studies in a more artistic, scientific or technical direction that will ultimately (after 3 or 5 years) result in a job in the Applied Arts (artistic creation for industrial purposes) or in an industrial based trade (such as mechanical engineering). The aim of this first year is to prepare the students to make the choice as to whether they wish to continue with the general or with the technological 'Baccalaureat' in their next two years of study (Première and Terminale).

Compulsory subjects:

These include subjects such as French, foreign languages, technology, social sciences and economy, natural sciences, Maths, engineering sciences...

Self-selected classes:

The students are required to select and follow two during their first year. These include subjects such as engineering sciences or technological creation and innovations.

The benefit of this variety is to allow students to discover a wide range of subjects linked to the evolution of the industrial sector and it allows them to make a subsequent choice of speciality according to their interests.

The "Baccalaureats" :

    - Vocational 'Baccalaureat'  in  car and motorcycle maintenance : a vocational diploma which spans three years (just like its technological counterparts). Students get the opportunity to learn to welcome a client, receive a vehicle (customer service), to diagnose problems, to repair  the vehicle, etc.

    - Technical 'Baccalaureats' (speciality 'STI2D' : Industrial sciences and technology Durability Developpement) :

    ITEC : Technologic Innovation and Eco-Conception .

    EE : Energy and Environnement.

    AC : Architectural and Construction.

SIN  : System Information and Numeric.

Applied arts baccalaureat : it includes visual communication design (illustration, advertising etc), fashion and object designing.

    - Scientific 'baccalaureat', option engineering sciences :

A wider-scope science-based 'baccalaureat' which concentrates primarily on maths, physics and engineering

The 'Brevets de Technicien Supérieur' (BTS)

Car after-sales : train qualified technicians with recognised skills in the fields of car repair and diagnoses. They are also capable of organising and managing an after-sales workshop, taking into consideration customer service and transactions and commercial and financial techniques necessary for running a successful business.

Electro-technology: studies in electrical sciences in the fields of industrial production, services, housing, transport and power supply.

Steel Construction: designing and construction of buildings and structures using metal. This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in construction or who want to expand on the knowledge acquired during their GMc course (metallic engineering baccalaureat). This is the only such course offered in the academy of Bordeaux.

Mechanical product manufacturing : the study of the processes involved in the fabrication of industrial products. The job possibilities made available with this qualification are greatly varied as it deals with the bases of all industrial manufacturing. For example, this diploma opens up job possibilities in sectors such as agricultural industry, medicine, and automobile construction offering its graduates the opportunity to work in both public and private sectors, with the possibility of becoming, in the future, a production manager.

Internal Combustion Engines : this qualification provides students with expert knowledge in engine technology, that is to say, the techniques for testing, measuring and using the appropriate tools and machinery necessary to become a proficient engine technician.

Students acquire an elevated level of knowledge of how engines operate and function.

    Apprenticeships

This certificate provides learning alternately through practical experience in the work place, -a process of education which is valued highly at Lycée Claveille- and through school attendance. Professional training is an integral part of the learning system at Claveille and we work very closely with the companies and businesses involved.

The Aquitaine region kindly contributes to travel expenses, the cost of food and accommodation for the apprentices.

Currently, this program is only available for the BTS MCI students but we are hoping to extend this opportunity to other specialities.
